US Patent Granted to Indian
Scientists for Work on Analgesics
Description and Advantages
Two Indian scientists have been
granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark
Office for an invention that relates to topically applied
pharmaceutical compositions for providing analgesic
and anti-inflammatory relief in humans.
The patent has been granted, recently
for their new medicinal invention for an analgesic anti-inflammatory
composition and method of preparing the biologically
active organic compound from a plant species using a
dermatological acceptable carrier (code no. AK-CUR-95).
The scientists are C. Janakiram, Deputy Director (Technical),
Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Ministry
of Chemicals & Fertilizers, New Delhi, and Dr. Md.
Khalliullah, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Jawaharlal
Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, India. The
patent was filed in 1999.
The Product exhibited significant thereapeutic activity
in mammalian subjects. The compositions of the invention
act rapidly, often provviding relief (i.e., 80 to 90
per cent reduction in pain) within 10 to 15 minutes
of application, in addition to being effective for up
to 24 hours with no observed side effects. Other Patents
in Canada and International (PCT) are being field; PCT-Patent
Cooperative Treaty is an international agreement between
104 member countries including virtually all of the
major economic powers, which allow the inventors to
preserve the right to file in those countries through
a single application.
Janakiram had started his career with the Indian Drugs
and Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Hyderabad, in 1966, which
he left after 17 years to join the Union government
in 1983 and is presently working as Deputy Director
(Technical) in the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals.
Dr. Khalilullah began his career, as a lecturer with
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad
in 1976, became reader in 1991 and professor in 1999.
He has eight scientific journals published in international
journals.
The two scientists were classmates in Osmania University
during 1971-73 and had to make all the efforts on their
own without any financial assistance. They had to spend
all their savings and also had to borrow from their
friends and relatives, it is learnt.
Area Of Application
The primary object of the invention
is to provide a topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory
composition containing the invented compound. The compositions
have patent analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties
and are thus useful in the treatment of conditions involving
pain and/or inflammation, such as migraines, musculoskeletal
and joint disorders, low back pain, spondylosis, cramps,
sprain and the like. Another object of the invention
is to provide tropical therapeutic composition which
can be prepared in the form of a gel, lotion, ointment,
spray, liquid, liniment, and the like.
