Cattle Lick Manufacture

Introduction

Common salt, one of the essential minerals for human beings is equally important for cattle. It is also a very convenient vehicle for feeding trace minerals like iron, cobalt, copper and manganese to cattle. The trace minerals plays an important part in the digestion of food and healthy growth and maintenance of body tissues. For these reasons, the use of salt and trace elements as regular ingredients of the cattle feed has been accepted by the modern dairies and farms. This practice improves the general health of the cattle and also increases the milk yield substantially. Finely ground common salt is mixed with a requisite quantity of powdered e.g. magnesium Oxide, some additives and magnesium chloride solution. The paste is then thoroughly mixed and transferred to wooden moulds for making 2 kg blcoks. The material is pressed gently into the moulds and allowed to remain for 2-3 hours. The moulded blocks are then taken out and exposed to direct sunlight for a few hours which is enough to cure and harden the salt.
