Description

Food grade hexane is produced from raw hexane feed by using sulfolane to reduce the unsaturates content.

Salient Features

  1. •  Use of Sulpholane, as extraction solvent, possesses a favorable combination of solvent power and selectivity

  2. •  Globally hydrogenation route is preferred for removal of benzene and olefins from naphtha fractions.

  3. •  Hydrogenation route is unattractive for feeds with high aromatic content, as it requires higher capital investment

  4. •  Sulpholane extraction technology developed at IIP can accept feed with any benzene content and is economical as compared with hydrogenation

Commercialization:

  1. •  This technology was developed by CSIR-IIP in 1984 in collaboration with EIL.

  2. •  First commercialized in BPCL, Mumbai in 1989
