Introduction

The invention combines a novel method of preparation and a composition consisting of recognitive polymers with inherent signal transduction. These novel polymer materials can selectively sense (recognize, detect, and bind) a previously imprinted protein or peptide analyte. This property can be extended to other imprinted molecules, including but not limited to carbohydrates (mono-, oligo- and polysaccharides), glycoproteins and proteoglycans, biological and other molecules including carboxyl, hydroxyl, or amino functional groups, as well as biologicals containing molecular decoys (moieties) such as glucose, phenols, polyacids, polyols, polyamines, polypeptides, etc.

In a further development of this invention, these copolymer (RECONGEL) materials can be integrated into intelligent medical or pharmaceutical microdevices as films on silicon wafers, microcantilevers, glass slides, polymer films/substrates, and biodegradable polymer substrates. These RECONGEL systems can also be used in association with standard photolithography processes to create novel biosensors with sensing/recognitive capabilities, as well as associated signal transmitting capabilities.
