Type of Technology

Indigenous

Area of Technology

Waste Management/Environment and Pollution

Deatils of Present/existing technology. Shortfall/Technological gaps in the existing technology

A present there is no technology worth the name which can be used on large scale. Some small scale industries are collecting the spent nickel catalysts from various sources and trying to produce some nickel salts, with poor nickel recoveries.

Approach adopted in new technology to evade technological gap in the existing one

This technology is new and different from the existing technology

Advantage

The technology provides a qualitative recovery of nickel. The final product will be ferro-nickel, which finds use in the making of stain less steels. This technology will be suitable for large scale, medium scale as well as small scale industries also.

Brief Description

Spent Nickel catalysts are generated in various industries like chemical, petrochemical, fertiliser, hydro-generation industries. So far there is no organised management and use of these spent nickel catalysts. In this technology, the spent nickel catalysts are mixed with suitable additives and then subjected to reductive smelting to produce ferro-nickel

Major Raw Material

Spent Nickel Catalyst, Mill Scale (iron oxide), reducing agents, etc.

Major Plant Equipment/Machinery

Oil/gas fired furnace, reaction vessels, etc.

Area of Application

Minerals, Metals and Materials

Applications

The product of the technology i.e. ferro-nickel is an essential material in the making of stainless steel.

Status of Development

Ready for commercial use
