Introduction

The KKU-DCIP Clear reagent kit is an innovative product released from a Thai company. The kit applied the characteristic of hemoglobin E that is oxidatively untable so that it can be made precipitate when react with some certain oxidizing agent. This precipitated hemoglobin E can then be simple observed by naked eyes. The detection of hemoglobin E is therefore simple and rapid. The kit is ready to use and no additional preparation of reagent is required. With its simple protocol, the screening test can be performed by an un-experience person. The screening process is finished within 15 minutes at 37 degrees C with only one deop of peripheral blood. The reagent is stable at 4 degrees C over a long period. With this product, the sensitivity and specificity of screening are usually at least 95 per cent.

Area of Application

This reagent kit is designed for use in a large population screening of hemoglobin E which is an important step in prevention and control of thalasemia in endemic regions especially among Asian countries. in addition, using with standard methods in routine hematologic work at the hospital, it can significantly reduce number of cases requiring further investigation with other labor intensive and expensive methods. The test is simple enough so that those of personel at the community health care center could perform it with acceptable result.
