Technology Description

This technology is a process for applying a Titanium Oxide coating to a glass substrate.

  • The technology, known as a Photoactive Scratch Resistant TiO2 Coating, provides a self-cleaning action.
  • The process was developed to provide a low-cost solution to cleaning glass panels and provide an anti-fogging capability.
  • As commercial and residential buildings become taller and use more glass it is more difficult and dangerous to clean windows.
  • In countries with high particulates in the air, glass cleaning is required more often.
  • A self-cleaning glass coating is a solution to reduce the amount of cleaning required, thus saving costs and potential injuries to workers.
  • TiO2 has been used as a protective coating on a number of applications, such as glass and metal surfaces for years.
  • TiO2 provides a photo-catalytic process when struck by ultra-violet (UV) light to produce electrons and holes (electron-hole pairs) that carry positive and negative charges.
  • This action creates oxidizing hydroxyl radicals to remove organics.
  • When water is applied, inorganic dust and dirt is removed in a hydrophilic sheeting action rather than creating water spots.

It was developed to be a stand-alone product and process that can be implemented at a lower cost than existing TiO2 application technologies.
