Introduction

The technology for fully standardized natural dyes is being developed under a major at Alps Industries, Saibabad, with support from TIFAC. Natural dyes are variable and it is difficult to reproduce exact shades as there is great variation in naturally available materials. This has lead to poor usage of natural dyes. The present project is to overcome this limitation by perfecting the technology for fully standardized natural dyes.

Present / Existing Technology

At present most of the natural dyes are produced in situ i.e., the coloring matter is extracted form the  raw material just before the use. This approach has many drawbacks. One of them being non-reproducibility of results, the other being the handling of a large biomass produced as a  result of the extraction of the coloring matter from the raw material. Storage stability of the extracted colorant is also limited and requires large storage area. The dyeing with the colorant produced in situ are not standardisedand hence non reproducible

Approach adopted in new technology to evade technological gap in the existing one.

In the proposed technology the Natural dyes are produced in the powder for m. The preparation of dyes in the powder from is free from the above mentioned drawbacks and has many advantages. The powders besides being stable over a  long period of time are easy to handle and store. The shades can be easily standardised and reproduced . The batch to batch variations can be minimized by reproducing large batches or by  blending  and homogenizing many small batches.

Advantages of New Technology

Some of the major advantages of the proposed technology are

  • Production of Natural dyes in standardised powder form
  • Standardisation by centralised bulk production and for blending
  • Easy of Storage , transport and handling
  • Easy to use and express the results in the conventional percent basis

Salient Features

  • Analysis of the raw materials as per the specifications Grinding of the raw material to the required mesh size.
  • Extraction of the colorant from the raw material att specified pH and tempereature for the required time period.
  • Decantation , Centrifugation and /or filteration of the extract Concentration at low temperature under vaccum and /or drying Alternatively spray-drying of the concentrate Grinding to the required partcle size.
  • Formulation and Packing

Applications for Ec-friendly Natural Dyes

Natural dyes produced by the proposed technology and processes can be used for

  • Dyeing of textile substrates such as fibres, yarns, fabrics and garments, etc.
  • Selected shades can be produced on cotton, silk, wool, jute, coir, rayons, nylon, polyester, and their blends.
  • Coloration of Paper
  • Coloration of Wooden toys
  • Coloration of cane products
  • Coloration of Walls, wooden doors and furniture
  • Coloration of Wax ,Candles etc.
  • Coloration of Soap and other cosmetics
  • Tattooing of skin
  • Coloration of Doll's hair
  • Tints for human hair
