Technology
Process and Machine for Superfinishing of Complex Surfaces

Technology Description

The technology is a micro/nano finishing process. It consists of a specially designed tool and flow of smart polishing fluid to finish any 3D surface. The traditional methods of finishing processes like grinding, lapping, honing etc. are the most critical, labor intensive and uncontrollable for finishing operations in the manufacturing of precision parts. Magnetic field assisted finsihing processes developed for precise control of finishing forces to prevent subsurface damage during polishing. Polishing 3D surface with specially designed tool and using magnetic field to control stiffness of the polishing tool in finishing region solve problem of micro/nano finishing of 3D external surfaces as in molds.

Applications

Finishing of precise molds, small biomedical or machine parts, silicon mirrors for strategic applications, contact lens mould finishing and practically any 3D external surface.

Benefits

  • Accessibility of polishing tool to reach all features on surface for finishing.
  • Precise control of finishing forces with the help of externally controlled magnetic field. Recirculation of polishing fluid to update new cutting edges in the finishing zone for better efficiency.
  • Conditioning of polishing fluid for better productivity and longer usage life.
  • In process control of finishing forces to dynamically change extent of abrasion as per requirements.
