Technology
Cellulose Based Porous Membrane for Bioseparation, Bioconversion

Technology Description

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of cellulose based porous membrane suitable for bioseparation, bioconversion or related operations of biotech industries. The developed cellulose based porous membranes possess the advantages such as high flux, good hydrophilicity, excellent film-forming ability, good mechanical properties, and high chemical reactivity. All these properties make developed membranes suitable for bioseparation, bioconversion or related operations of biotech industries.

Applications

As the developed cellulose based porous membranes is a charged membrane, it can be used without any further amplification of the number of active groups in various biotech applications without major reduction in flux such as removal of specific biological species from complex mixtures, chromatographic separation, affinity chromatography, membrane bioreactors, etc.

Benefits

Although membranes has the advantages such as easy scale up, high throughput etc., but the fouling of polymeric membrane remains a major problem which reduces productivity and increases maintenance and operating costs. Membrane has to undergo different chemical reaction to make it suitable for biosepration, bioconversion which may results in the reduction of pore size and enhance the fouling. To overcome all these problems, the present invention has developed a cellulose based porous membranes which has properties such as high pore size, chemical and mechanical stability and biodegrability to overcome the after use disposal problem.
