2-D Nano-Positioner
Technology Description
The technology is a 2-Dimensional Nano-positioner
device with complete control electronic and computer interface.
Nano-Positioners are being used in Photonics, MEMS, Semiconductor
& Biomedical Industry, Microscopy etc. A number of two
dimensional nano-positioners are available in market, but
they are bulky (in most cases), complicated and expensive.
The available products are mainly based
on two technologies:
- Piezoelectric actuators
- Servo motors
This technology is a new way to get nanometre
resolution (<50 nanometre) motion in two dimensions by
using 'bimorphs'. The device comes with a microcontroller
based stand alone control unit. This unit has keys to control
movement in 2-Dimensions; linear in X-Y and angular about
z-axis. The control electronics has an option of computer
interfacing and could be controlled from computer as well.
Control unit requires house hold power supply.
Benefits
The device is compact, light weight and
low cost. Underlying principle leaves enough scope of customized
product design. All degrees of freedom in 2-Dimensions can
be achieved; linear in X-Y and angular about z-axis. Travel
length in centimetres with step size of 50 nanometres. Temperature
range of operation is -271° C to 60° C. No mechanical
access is required and the device can work in vacuum and high
magnetic field. The device has no voltages 'ON' when not in
operation; this eliminates unwanted addition of electrical
and mechanical noise.
