Technology Description
The technology is- development of Holographic Solar Modules
for high efficiency solar energy conversion. A hologram is
a diffracting element that can do multiple functions such
as light concentration, wavelength selection etc. In the proposed
system the holographic element concentrates and spectrally
split the light radiation so as to effectively couple the
energy to a multi-junction solar cell. This ensures cool concentrated
light with tuned spectral distribution, optimum for the multijunction
cell. Also, instead of stacking the multi-junction layers,
the layers can be linearly distributed. The innovation uses
a high efficiency and stable holographic material in conjunction
with the high efficiency multijunction solar cells.
Applications
Since this is an innovation to double up the yield of present
day solar modules, with no additional cost, if mass produced,
there are lots of real life applications. Successful commercialization
will redefine household and industrial energy use. The enhanced
yield will help to popularize solar energy use and thereby
will help to reduce the carbon foot-print.
Benefits
Efficiency of conventional commercial grade solar cells is
about 15% and successful realisation and commercial production
of the proposed solar modules will improve the efficiency
of solar energy conversion by about two times.
