Medicinal Plant Extracts
Introduction
The extraction of herbs of medicinal and
commercial value is known to Indians at least for the last
5000 yrs. Depending on the nature of the constituents, or
the requirement of the pharmaceutical procedures, the extraction
is done in water, oil, kanjee or alcohol (which is often self-generated
during process). The reasons for resorting to extraction are
to: a) reduce the bulk herbal drugs, b) subdue the inherent
toxicities, if any, iii) enhance the therapeutic value and
thus ensure maximum user compliance.) The north eastern states
of India are blessed with the bounties of mother nature. Studies
conducted by experts show that more than 300 species of herbs
growing in this region either find a mention in classical
books of ayurveda or used traditionally as remedial measure
to treat various illness.Fresh solvent is mixed with material
