Probiotics
Introduction
Probiotics are live microbial feed supplement, which beneficially
affects the host animal by improving intestinal microbial
balance. They are micro-organisms with antagonistic activity
against pathogens in vivo. Probiotic organisms can have a
significant influence on the treatment and prevention of disease.
They alter the intestinal micro flora balance, inhibit the
growth of harmful bacteria, promote good digestion, boost
immune function and increase resistance to infection. The
intestinal tracts of all mammalian species harbour a complex
collection of micro-organisms, mostly anaerobic bacterial
species, these are known as intestinal micro flora. This micro
flora is mostly located in the large bowel in the monogastric
animals. Approximately 10 - 12 thousand species have been
detected in human colon and amongst these also 400 species
count for 99%. It is believed that this intestinal micro-flora
contributes towards healthy life. After initial successes
with foods that reduce blood cholesterol level, probiotic
bacteria are the latest field of research in this direction.
Various Lactobacillus species and yeast stains (formulations)
are currently being marketed as probiotics.
