Micro-Hardness Tester
Brief Description
The operation of the instrument is based
on indenting a diamond indentor (square based pyramid with
an angle of 1360) on the specimen surface under test with
a certain load in gm and measuring linear value (d) of the
diagonal of the indentor print obtained.
The hardness number (H) is calculated by dividing the load
(P in Kg) by the surface area (S in sq mm) of the indentor
print and is expressed as H= P/S or 1.854 P/d2.
Salient Features
Opto-mechanical instrument
- Can be used for measuring microscopic hardness in micro
Vickers.
- The instrument comprises of a microscope with a Filar
micrometer piece mounted on a stand,
- Loading and unloading mechanism attached to the microscope
for taking an indentation of a diamond indentor on a specimen
surface under certain load in gms and
- Illumination system mounted on the microscope and a rotating
table having X and Y movements.
Applications
The system would be used for measuring microscopic hardness
in micro vickers of metals / alloys, various phases I micro-constituents
present in metal matrix, thin wires, sheets, diffusion coatings
and case depth of carburised / nitrided components etc.
