Ultrasonic Range Sensor

Brief Description

A range sensor measures the distance from a reference point (usually on the sensor itself) to objects in the field of view of the sensor. Range sensors are used for robot guidance and obstacle avoidance someplace estimating the distance to the closest object is of interest, general shape characteristics of object in robot workspace are also estimated. CSIO has developed one such system, which has been successfully tested and used for imaging applications It uses a pair of low cost.40 KHz piezoelectric crystals. One crystal acts as transmitter of ultrasound which after reflection from the object is received by the other crystal. A microcomputer finds the time-of-flight of ultrasound which is linearly related to the range.
