Pit Digger
for Coffee Plantations
Introduction
An lndian institute, engaged in
the mechanical engineering R&D since 1958, has developed
the above equipment. In a coffee plantation pits have to be
dug for planting the coffee plants, proper and scientific
pit creation helps in proper root formation and reflects in
the health of the coffee plant. A healthier plant yields more
coffee fruits and tastier beans. The pit digger can be used
for digging pits of 30 cm depth. The equipment is light in
weight and easily maneuverable in a hilly terrain. The basic
part of the machine is a prime mover which is an M-80 petrol
engine mounted on an aluminum channel with a pair of handle
bars for performing the pit digging operation along with a
reduction gear box system. It consists of a fuel tank, transmission
system, clutch and gear shifting lever, throttle, reduction
gear box and augur unit. The total weight of the machine is
37 kg.
Advantages
- Saves the time, labour charges
- Light in weight and easily maneuverable
in hilly terrain
- Improved quality in pit digging and
uniformity in pit sizes
- It takes one minute to complete the
pit
