Hybrid
Optical Correlator for Pattern Recognition
Introduction
Pattern recognition involves identification
of a reference pattern in a collection of input patterns.
Optical correlators play a crucial role in the development
of pattern recognition systems. A hybrid optical correlator
incorporates the parallel processing capabilities of optical
systems and the ruggedness and accuracy of electronic systems.
A prototype compact optical correlator has been developed
for machine vision applications. The system has been developed
with commercially available components such as laser diode,
spatial light modulators (SLM) and CCD cameras, controlled
by personal computer. The architectures of joint-transform
correlation and matched filter correlation are simultaneously
incorporated in the prototype, which has been tested for fingerprint
identification applications.
Special Features:
Real-time identification of targets,
Video-rate operation, PC based user interface
