Technology
Design of an Artificial Knee Joint (Prosthesis) for an above Knee Amputee

Introduction

The knee joint developed satisfy the biomechanical & functional principles. An emphasis is laid on meeting the social requirement imposed by the conditions prevailing in Afro- Asian countries. Here the people have a habit of sitting in a squatting position for many activities starting from the use of toilet to farming operation & in cross legged sitting posture for relaxation & during their daily prayers. Amputees wearing usual prosthesis are not in a position to perform the above function. To achieve these functions a universal joint flexion controlled mechanism is developed. Simultaneously a 4 bar & a 6 bar mechanisms is also developed.
