Electro Spot Testing Kit for Alloys
Brief Description
Properties and applications of various
alloys depend upon their alloying elements. To identify and
estimate the elements, conventional methods of chemical analysis
and instrument techniques are being used which are costly,
time consuming and mostly destructive.
The alloying elements, which can be identified, are Cr, Ni,
Mo, W, V, Co, Mn and C. The alloying elements present can
be identified by the development of different colours like
pink, light pink, dark violet, amber, sky-blue, gray and bluish
gray.
The electro spot testing kit is accomplished by electrically
dissolving a minute amount of metal ions from the unknown
material in a chemically treated test paper. Few drops of
specified electrolyte are added over the test paper. The wet
filter paper is then pressed in between aluminum cathode and
the unknown metal serving as anode. Some amount of current
is then allowed to flow through the metal surface for a few
seconds in order to extract a minute amount of metal ions
on the test paper. Specific reagents are then added in sequence
to develop a well defined, easy to identify colour spot, which
represents the known alloying element. The colour intensity
will indicate the semi-quantitative analysis of that element.
