Energy Food

Introduction

Energy Food is a supplementary food beneficial in combating protein-calorie malnutrition of the vulnerable group of the population, particularly the young children. The energy food is being used in the country, for supplementary feeding programs for pre-school children, applied nutrition activities and midday meal schemes. It can be served to the people of drought affected areas. Energy Food can be very beneficial as supplementary food in rural areas where children are found malnourished, with protein-calorie, vitamin and minerals.

Energy Food is based on blends of locally available raw materials such as wheat, bengalgram, edible groundnut flour, jaggery and fortified with vitamins and minerals. 100 g of this product provide about 15 g of protein and 390 calories of energy and adequate amounts of vitamin and minerals. By adopting suitable market strategy this low cost food can be popularised as a consumer item in rural areas.

The Energy Food can be prepared by simple operations like precleaning of raw materials, roasting under optimal conditions, powdering to required mesh size and then mixing.

The equipments used are indigenously available and they are destoner, roaster, pulveriser, mixer arid heat sealer.
