Agrotechnology for dryland Horticulture
Growing of fruit crops is one of the many
ways of crop diversification in drylands. Dryland horticulture
not only provides higher income to the farmers, but also more
stable returns, besides utilizing the off-season precipitation.
Several farmers are evincing keen interest in cultivating
fruit crops like ber, pomegranate, custard apple, amla, guava,
tamarind and karonda etc. under drylands. Standard agronomic
package of practices for many of these dryland fruit crops
either sole or in agri-horticultural systems, both for Alfisols
and Vertisols, have been evolved.
Technology
The technologies essentially involved
identification of appropriate fruit species suitable to land
capability and rainfall of the area choosing the right varieties
planting site modification water management mulching and use
of soil amendments. The consultancy is offered in dryland
horticulture to provide guidance on land suitability assessment
and cultivation technology of fruit plants compatible agri-horticultural
systems etc.
ICAR
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research
is an apex organization at the national level to plan, undertake,
aid, promote and co-ordinate education, research and its application
in agriculture, agro-forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries,
home science and allied sciences. It also provides, undertakes
and promotes consultancy services in the fields of agricultural
education, research, training and dissemination of new technologies
and information. During last 7 decades it has executed a large
number of research projects and has brought out technologies
which have been commercialized. It is now a globally recognized
R&D and education organization.
