Power Generation from Waste
Introduction
Environment Ministry of Japan has planned to increase the
number of waste incinerators and their power generating capacity.
The incinerators are being made less harmful to the environment
and a new subsidy system for local governments may also be
established to help prevent global warming. The plan will
also promote the improvement and development of human waste
disposal, as all such disposal into the sea is to be forbidden
by February 2007. The ministry is focusing on various steps
to curb global warming and is moving to reduce emission of
dioxins from waste disposal facilities. According to the plan,
power generation equipment will be added to existing waste
incinerators, while new facilities will be equipped with similar
equipment along with machinery to harness methane from waste
fermentation. On March 31, 2000, there were 1,717 waste incinerators
nationwide, of which 215 generated power. The goal is to generate
4,170 MW of power from waste disposal facilities including
those dealing with industrial waste in next eight years. The
current seven year plan will ends in March 2005.
