Metallurgy Techniques - Magnesium Chemicals: Mag-Sulph, Mag-Carb Using Waste Magnesite Dust

Introductin

Magnesite dust containing 40-50% MgO (60-80 mesh) is treated with sulphuric acid under controlled conditions and is followed by crystallisation. After solid-liquid separation, mag-sulph crystals are produces which can be utilised for producing magnesium carbonate with sodium sulphate as a byproduct.

Major raw materials : Magnesite dust, Sulphuric acid, water, steam etc.

Major Plant Equipment/Machinery

Constant stirred tank reactor, crystallizer, centrifuge, filter press, a small boiler

Applications

Magsulph can be used for manufacturing high quality magnesite bricks, fire proofing, micronutrients for tea gardens, pharmaceuticals etc. and as a starting material for other Mag-chemicals.

Additional Information

A plant with a capacity of 1500 tpa magsulph and 900 tpa mag-carbonate at 100% capacity utilisation will have 60% return on investment.
