Metallurgy Techniques - Technology for the Control of Pollution in Cast Iron Foundries

Introductin

Approach adopted in new technology to evade technological gap in the exiting one It involves design changes in cupola followed by design of tailor-made pollution control system.

It uses design modifications in the cupola to convert it into a divited blast system and then uses tail-made high performance cyclones optimized for foundry dust to clean the gas. It is a dry process

Constraints in technology

It is suitable only for removal of Particulates and CO.

Major Plant Equipment

Dry pollution control equipment that include specially designed cyclones and accessories. For very fine dusts a bag filter may be needed.

Applications

For control of SPM in C.I. Foundries. The technology can bring down SPM level within CPCB norms i..e. below 150 mg/Nm3.

Being a dry system, does not create secondary pollution

Status of Development

The Technology was developed for 5 tph melting capacity cupola and implemented in two foundries in Howrah in November, 1995 and April, 1996 respectively. In the first case the cleaned gas contained SPM of about 100 mg/Nm3 and in the second case the SPM content of the cleaned gas was about 115 mg/Nm3. Both the unit are running smoothly.
