Electronics &
Communication Technologies -Rs-232 Fibre Optic Extender
Introduction
A national research organisation is offering a technology
for RS-232 fibre optic extender to extend 16 RS-232
serial communication lines beyond the specified distanceof
50 feet. The system comprises two identical units connected
to each other with a pair of optical fibres over which
16 Rx and 16 tx signals are transmitted. With the help
of the system the distance between Data Communication
Equipment (DCE) and Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) can
be extended up to one kilometre.
Technical Specifications:
No. of RS-232 channels available 16 (RX/TX Lines)

Electrical, Electronics :
The system is useful where multiple RS-232 supported
devices are located away from the computer (DCE). With
minor modifications in the design the system can be
configured to support 16 digit/I/O lines to transit
16 bit of digital data to remote location. It can be
used in a large factories where clusters of numerical
controlled machines can be down loaded from the main
computer where programme development is done.
Totally transparent operation.
All RS-232 baud rates supported.
Independent and synchronous channel rates.
Manchester encoding-decoding on multiplexer data
communications to reduce the number of fibres to two.
Indication of channel activities on front panel.
Multimode graded index fibres with SMA connectors.
Two identical units to implement the system.
