Introduction
Ornamental fish breeding and rearing
is an attractive new opportunity available to fish farmers
and traders all over the world. The potentials are enormous
considering the large number of species involved and
the ever-growing international export and domestic markets.
The real opportunity lies in its value addition through
selective breeding and genetic manipulations resulting
in development of new attractive colour strains and
ornamental characters. The trade with a turnover of
US$ 5 Billons and annual growth rate of 6% offers a
lot of scope for development. The top exporting country
is Singapore followed by Hongkong, Malaysia, Thailand,
Philippines, Srilanka, Taiwan, Indonesia and India.
The largest importer of Ornamental fish is the USA followed
by Europe and Japan, the emerging markets are China
and South Africa.
