India loses about 20-30 % of its crops
to pests and disease each year. This damage which amounts
to about Rs. 6000 crores annually, reduces farmers agricultural
income considerable. The excessive and indiscriminate
use of pesticides has also led to the development of
resistance in many pests. This has caused what is called
the "pesticides treadmill", as pests develop
resistance to pesticides, the farmer's increase the
dosage and the frequency of the pesticide application.
Some of the important pests, which have developed resistance
to pesticides include Helicoverpa harmful to cotton,
crop which has developed resistance to nearly all kinds
of pesticides.As opposition to the use of chemical pesticide
mounts on grounds have environmental and health consideration,
the demand for Bio pesticides is expected to increase.
