Energy
Techonologies - Alternative Fuel for Surface
Transportation
Introduction
This Ministry has taken up projects
for the development and demonstration of electric vehicles
(EVs), with rechargeable batteries and fuel cells as
a power source. EVs are non-polluting, make no-noise
and conserve oil and petroleum products.
MNES is giving emphasis to the development of advanced,
maintenance-free valve regulated lead acid, NiMH and
lithium ion polymer electrolyte batteries and fuel cells
especially for EVs. NiMH prototype batteries using indigenously
available alloys have been developed for two-wheelers.The
demonstration programme on battery operated passenger
vehicles (BOPVs) taken up through state nodal agencies
and departments implementing the renewable energy programme
provides Central Financial Assistance on BOPVs.
Objectives:
Development and applications of electric vehicles
and hydrogen powered vehicles which are eco-friendly
and run quietly, help in preserving oil and petroleum
products and in keeping the ambient air clean and
free from pollution
Activities:
Research in materials/processes/fabrication techniques
Development of advanced high energy density rechargeable
batteries for EVs
Development and demonstration of EVs
Training / manpower development.
Ongoing Projects:
Development of nickel metal hydride batteries for
electric vehicles
Development, demonstration and performance evaluation
of battery powered electric cycle rickshaws
Development of three-phase AC drive with IGBT inverter
for battery powered electric vehicles
Development of lithium ion secondary batteries
Achievements:
Small prototypes of nickel metal hydride batteries
developed for electric vehicles
Prototype battery powered cycle rickshaws developed
and field tested
Battery powered electric three wheelers developed
Battery powered passenger vehicles provided through
State Nodal Agencies/Departments
Thrust Areas:
R & D on eco-friendly electric and alternate
energy/hydrogen energy vehicles
R&D on advanced high energy density batteries
for electric vehicles
R&D on material/ technology development, performance
improvements, etc
